Response to Gerard Jones "Violent Media Is Good For Kids"

Gerard Jones may believe Violent Media is good for kids but his attempt to convince us are just opinions from his viewpoint.
He starts of with personal emotions and opinions. The upside to this is that sometimes people may sympathize and connect to his emotions with him. "I suffocated my deepest fears and desires into a young boy persona." He is trying to connect with the reader by letting them know that he couldn't be himself, he had to hide under someone he wasn't and by saying this he is interpreting that he is not the only child out there that isn't aloud to express themselves in a matter in which they want to. "I withdrew into passivity and loneliness." Here he is trying to earn the readers sympathy by letting them know that without being able to express himself he withdrew from others and that can happen to other kids too.
Then he uses his mothers student opinion as reference stating they believe comics are actually positive. "One of my mother's students convinced her that Marvel Comics, despite their apparent juvenility and violence, were in fact devoted to lofty messages of pacifism and tolerance." but then he proclaims that he wasn't interested in them because of the lofty messages but just because of the violence and doesn't back up why in that paragraph. Just saying "But not because they preached lofty messages of benevolence. They were good for me because they were juvenile . And Violent." puts him no where still. It just puts the reader in a questioning position because, because they are violent and juvenile isn't telling us anything positive. Just making them think more negative about the video games. He's still at square one.
Then he goes and talks about how hulk is raging and fearless, which made him feel that it was okay to feel that way. Again he gives so facts as to why this is okay.
Then he goes into talking about his own experiences and still gives no factual evidence.
After he uses his own son as an example of courage. That Tarzan helped his son overcome a fear of his, but this is his son. How does Jones know that this will help everyones children, and if he does then he still hasn't told the reader anything that is not based on personal experiences.
After all the information he gives out he finally tells us of a psychologist opinion Melanie Moore. "Children need violent entertainment in order to explore the inescapable feelings that they've been taught to deny, and reintegrate those feelings into a more whole, more complex, more resilient selfhood." Since this information is from someone who is in higher knowledge which would be assumed that has done research it connects and catches the readers attention more. Also has more relevance to convincing the readers that Violent media can be good for their child. They also start research and a program and find that children can connect to these stories and make them feel more powerful. "Pretending to have superhuman powers helps children conquer the feelings of powerlessness." He then gives a bit more information on how toy guns etc. help children with mastering their rage.
Jones then goes back to opinions and assumptions. Jones didn't give any factual evidence in his argument that really helps people side with him. How about when these kids grow up how will violent media still help because of all the "violent and juvenile content" Does toy guns now turn into real guns later? Factual evidence that will help everyones children is what matters. Jones needed more of it.

On the recent shooting in Florida of the 17 kids who were murdered NYTimes I believe covered the story fairly. NYTimes influences the public opinion by showing videos of the students who were actually involved in the shooting, footage of the day of the shootings and more information. They are mostly emphasizing that something needs to be done about the gun laws.

College Is A Waste?

Paragraph #1  Thesis Statement " I believe higher education is broken."     This sentence clearly states what position he has taken or what his thoughts are on college education. He firmly states that his position in this essay is that college is a waste of time.  Paragraph #2 & 3 He really basis his evidence on opinion. "I t rewards conformity rather than independence, competition rather than collaboration, regurgitation rather than learning, and theory rather than application. Our creativity, innovation, and curiosity are schooled out of us." " Failure is punished instead of seen as a learning opportunity. We think of college as a steppin g- stone to success rather than a means to gain knowledge. College fails to empower us with the skills necessary to become productive members of today’s global entrepreneurial economy." Paragraph #4  The main evidence is finally provided that really supports the Thesis Statement. " In the bo

Presentations

A lot of my classmates did a great job with their presentation. They were loud and I could hear them very clearly. To improve presentations probably not staying in one spot. Also not going through the presentation so quickly. Not reading exactly from the board and not facing the board instead of the crowd the entire time. In my presentation I had great information to give in a simple manner. My paragraphs weren't long but i'm sure the class learned something new. I can improve my presentation by not being so nervous and speaking louder? In all the class did a great job!

"Playing For A Change" - Stand By Me

The title tells a lot about what the song is intended to do. He is literally playing for a change in humanity. The video uses elements of Rhetoric to create an argument in a visual way. In order to make the video he needed the equipment to do so. In order to make the video he also needed to find talented musicians, who knew how to play different instruments and sing. He traveled to video people from different countries. They are all connecting to one another through music or this particular song. Everyone who was featured was outside. To emphasize that we are all part of this world, all humans and equal. Everyone was outside to dwell on humbleness. The words that most appealed to me were "Always need somebody to stand by you," and by that he meant someone you know, maybe someone you don't know, or maybe even someone from another country but everyone needs somebody. The images that most impacted me were when he started showing the people and naming the countries from ar
